Everton’s Most Expensive PL Transfers
The conclusion of the summer transfer window is edging ever closer as teams clamour to hone and improve their squads ahead of the new campaign.
And as David Moyes approaches his first full term back in the Everton dugout since rejoining the club last season, the Toffees are hoping to bring in one or two more additions before the window slams shut.
Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish are among the names the Scotsman has already added over the summer as Moyes looks to build on the positive signs shown in the second half of the previous campaign.
But, with the impending deadline looming, we thought we’d take a look at some of Everton’s most expensive ever signings in the Premier League era.
Richarlison – £50m (2018)
Brazilian forward Richarlison, who’s now playing in Tottenham colours, remains the club’s record arrival after signing from Watford seven years ago.
Securing his signature was an undoubted success, with Richarlison going on to amass 53 goals in 152 appearances for the club.
He even helped end Everton’s 24-match winless run at Anfield when he scored the away side’s first goal in a 2-0 win.
Gylfi Sigurdsson – £45m
Having arrived from Swansea for a then-club record fee in 2017, the Icelandic midfielder was signed as a potential replacement for academy product Ross Barkley, who was pushing for a move away from Merseyside at the time.
But, unlike Richarlison, Sigurdsson’s time at Everton wasn’t quite as successful. He netted 31 goals in 156 appearances, but was left out of the club’s squad for the 2021/22 campaign, before being released on a free at the end of the season.
Alex Iwobi – £34m
The Nigerian arrived at Goodison Park after seeking a fresh challenge away from Arsenal in 2019.
A relatively hefty fee of £34 million meant eyes were on Iwobi when he stepped out in Everton blue, yet, after a slow start, he slowly started to win favour with the club’s fans.
In fact, he picked up the club’s Player of the Year Award in the 2022/23 campaign, where he played a key role in helping Everton avoid relegation to the Championship.
He has since joined Fulham, having departed Merseyside in 2023.
Amadou Onana – £33m
Like everyone else on this list, the Belgian midfielder may no longer be playing in Everton colours, but the fee paid for Amadou Onana in 2022 certainly warranted attention.
He arrived from Ligue 1 club Lille, having caught plenty of attention across the continent following his displays in the French top-flight.
Onana carried that momentum forward in the Premier League, where he established himself as a capable defensive midfielder and was reportedly the focus of attention from 20-time winners Manchester United.
However, no such move materialised, and he eventually joined Aston Villa for £50 million last summer, resulting in a tidy profit for Everton in the process.
Jordan Pickford – £30m
Not only is Jordan Pickford among the leading goalkeepers in the Premier League, but he’s the first player on this list to still be on Everton’s books today.
The former Sunderland man has played a leading role in the club avoiding relegation in recent years and has also established himself on the international stage as England’s first-choice between the sticks.
Many baulked at the £30 million price Everton paid back in 2017, but Pickford has more than hushed any of those doubts since and remains a vital cog in David Moyes’ squad for the new campaign.
