COULD EVERTON SIGN MOISE KEAN?

return to archives

Another day, another rumour linking Everton with a centre-forward. Recent reports from Italy have suggested that Everton have contacted Juventus over a possible transfer for the talented, young, Italian striker, Moise Kean. Would this transfer make sense for Everton? Is it at all realistic? After receiving the news regarding a potential Everton move for the 19 year old Kean, many Evertonians on social media have scoffed at the rumour, dismissing it as being untrue. Some more optimistic fans pointed to this possible move’s similarities with Everton’s signing of Romelu Lukaku in 2014. Similarly to Kean now, Lukaku was a very well regarded young and expensive striker, who was signed with a better side than Everton.

The general consensus amongst Evertonians supports the idea of signing the young Italian, yet is doubtful that it could materialise. Kean is a precocious talent, and one of the most well-renowned prospects in European football. For this reason, it seems unlikely that Juventus would be willing to sell.

Despite only having a year left on his contract, and playing very few games last season, this transfer does seem unlikely. This is partly due to how ambitious of a signing it would be, but also because of some comments made by Kean recently, which suggest he’s happy at Juventus.

Following transfer rumours linking him with Inter Milan, it was believed that Kean could be tempted by the move. However, in a recent interview with Soccer Bible, Kean stated: “I‘m sure that at the moment there aren’t any other teams that can help me improve in the way Juventus can. I was born here, and I have almost always worn the black-and-white shirt. Obviously I don’t know what the future holds, but what is sure is that I will always give my all.”

 These comments would suggest that Kean is happy at Juventus, and will eventually sign a contract extension.

As unlikely as it is, Everton acquiring Moise Kean would be a great move. Stylistically he fits the mould of what the club need up front. He’s both capable physically and technically. His ability to turn and run at players at pace is notable, but he’s also strong enough to hold up the ball and bring others in to play.

Although it’s an exciting rumour, the transfer seems very unlikely. At just 19 years old, he has years to improve, and could be a special player in his prime. It would be a strange move for Juventus to let go of a such a talented individual. A loan deal would perhaps be preferable to Kean and Juventus, however it can be assumed that Everton would want a permanent transfer for whoever is next season’s number nine.

Even if the move doesn’t happen, let’s hope that the rumour is true, and that Everton are interested in such an ambitious, quality signing. Hopefully the players who join in the summer are of a similar ilk and ability to that of talents, like Moise Kean.
