EVERTON 18/19 PLAYER RATINGS

A season of mixed results for Everton during the 2018/19 campaign has produced an equally varied display of player performances. I have tried to assign each player a rating based on their displays throughout the season.

Jordan Pickford

Perhaps not as impressive as his debut season in blue, Pickford has still had a fairly decent season. He’s produced consistent performances throughout much of the season, however the mistakes made by England’s No.1 were too frequent and far too memorable at times. 6

Seamus Coleman

Very much a season of two halves for Everton’s right-back. A difficult start provided games in which he clearly struggled, whilst seeming reluctant to go forward. The change from Walcott to Richarlison at right-wing appeared to trigger far more capable performances from Coleman. 6

Jonjoe Kenny

A disappointing season for the young right-back. His work-rate is undeniable, however, during the season’s early stages, he failed to establish himself as a struggling Seamus Coleman’s replacement. 5

Michael Keane

Probably Everton’s most improved player from the 2017/18 campaign. Michael Keane provided many great performances throughout the season, perhaps none better than his immense display at Goodison in the derby. 8

Kurt Zouma

Most Evertonians would love the big Frenchman to sign permanently, and with good reason. He established a solid partnership with fellow centre-back, Michael Keane, and contributed to fourteen clean sheets in the league. 7

Phil Jagielka

Despite playing a very little amount of games throughout the season, Jagielka did surprisingly well at times, with his goal against Arsenal standing out as a memorable moment of the season. However, he is understandably not the player he once was. 5

Yerry Mina

A difficult first season for Mina because of the injuries he’s suffered. When he’s played, he’s mostly done well, and hopefully he’ll have more minutes to impress next season. 5

Lucas Digne

An outstanding debut season for Digne. Creative, comfortable in possession, solid defensively, and has scored great goals. A consistent, standout performer for the Toffees in almost every game. PLAYER OF THE SEASON. 9

Leighton Baines

Due to the brilliant performances of Lucas Digne, Baines has had very little game time. However, he’s delivered capable performances when called upon. 5

Idrissa Gueye

Another very good season for the much-loved, Senegalese defensive-midfielder. When he plays well, it seems the team as a whole tends to excel. Such great performances have warranted interest from PSG and Manchester United. It would certainly be a great shame if he does move on in the summer. 8

Andre Gomes

An impressive season for the on-loan Portuguese playmaker. Despite taking a while to get going and showing signs of inconsistency at times, Gomes displayed enough quality for Evertonians to be crying out for him to sign permanently. His ability on the ball adds to the team’s creativity, and enables for the team’s better possession. 7

Morgan Schneiderlin

Although Schneiderlin didn’t feature for much of the season, he started a few games and did surprisingly well. He’s a player who’s been out of favour with fans in recent seasons, however deservedly earned praise following sound defensive displays towards the end of the season. 6

Tom Davies

The young midfielder featured more in the early stages of the season, and even captained the side for a few consecutive weeks. Despite struggling at times, he appeared to improve towards the end of this run. However he was eventually replaced in the team by Gomes, and Davies appeared scarcely since, and didn’t make much of an impression when he did play. 5

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Like much of the team, Sigurdsson struggled midway through the season. Despite this, with 13 goals and 6 assists in the league, he’s been a vital contributor to Everton’s attacking play. Similarly to Gueye, when Sigurdsson plays well, the team plays well. The wondergoal against Leicester outlined his quality. 7

Bernard

In spite of a fairly slow start for Bernard, he began to show his quality in the second-half of the season. He doesn’t yet have the goals and assists to back up these performances, however has become a fans’ favourite because of his exciting flicks and turns, combined with his hard-work and tenacity. 7

Richarlison

With 13 goals in the league, Richarlison has proven to be a quality signing. Having played well in positions across the front three, he’s proven to be reliable. Having said this, he was fairly ineffective in some games, despite his unquestionable work rate. A well-rounded player who’s equally as good physically as technically, he could be a special player. Hopefully he’ll continue to excel next season. 7

Theo Walcott

It’s been another difficult season for Theo Walcott. His attitude and effort is undeniable, and his pace is always a threat. However the end-product following the threat of his pace, remains absent. 4

Ademola Lookman

Despite making very few appearances this season, Lookman does impress at times. He’s exciting on the ball, and tends to make more of an impact from the bench than Walcott. Nevertheless, he often seems disinterested and can lack end-product. 5

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

When Everton were wondering who should be the starting striker, midway through the season, Calvert-Lewin stepped up and impressed. Always a handful for defences, his pace and strength is vital for attacking play. However, his first touch and finishing is poor at times. He may be replaced in the summer by a technically more capable striker. 6

Cenk Tosun

Despite being a likable player who’s scored goals elsewhere, Tosun has had enough time to impress, yet has failed to do so. He offers very little when starting, or when coming on from the bench. He’s a painfully slow striker in a team that benefits from having pace up front. 3
