Gomes impressed during the 2018/19 season whilst on a season long loan at Everton from Barcelona. Such notable performances warranted rumored interest from a number of clubs, including Premier League sides such as Tottenham, Arsenal, Wolves, and West Ham.

Recent rumours have suggested that Gomes wants to sign for Everton permanently. According to Spanish news outlets, Everton may have agreed personal terms with the player. The transfer fee is thought to be around £20.5m.

For many weeks, the comments and replies to Gomes’s social media posts have been filled with Evertonians calling for him to sign a permanent deal. This support highlights his popularity amongst fans, and this comes as a result of his great playing performances, as well as his community and charity work.

Throughout much of last season, he was a regular starter who played in a midfield three alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson and Idrissa Gueye. It’s expected that Gomes will be retain his starting place (if he signs) going in to next season.

Positionally, he’s not as defensive as the tough-tackling, hard-working, Idrissa Gueye, yet he’s not as advanced and attacking as Everton’s number 10, Gylfi Sigurdsson. The composure of Gomes in possession is key to the side’s overall ability to keep the ball, whilst his dribbling and strength on the ball helps to provide Everton with creativity from a deeper, central position.

It’d be a great addition for Everton, and he was viewed as one of the most important signings prior to the transfer window beginning. Fans are hoping this deal, along with securing a permanent deal for Kurt Zouma are completed. The Zouma deal appears more complex, as a potential transfer ban looms for Chelsea.

If this ban does occur, Chelsea may decide to keep hold of previously loaned out players, such as Zouma, in order to bolster their squad.

Hopefully both Gomes and Zouma sign, with the Gomes deal reportedly being imminent.
